The BET Awards 2025 showcased the best of Black culture, proving once more that it deserves its title as Culture’s Biggest Night. Kevin Hart brought his humor to the stage as the host, while stars from music, film, TV, and sports came together to celebrate talent.
Kendrick Lamar stole the spotlight, winning four key awards. His album GNX earned him Album of the Year, and his hit “Not Like Us” won Video of the Year. He also collaborated with SZA to take home the award for Best Collaboration. Their long-time creative ally, Dave Free, was co-awarded for Video Director of the Year with Kendrick.
In the R&B categories, SZA won Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and Chris Brown took home Best Male R&B/Pop Artist. The duo Future and Metro Boomin earned their title as Best Group, thanks to their chart-topping album.
Breakout artists also received recognition. Leon Thomas, a former child actor turned singer, won Best New Artist, while Doechii made waves with Best Female Hip Hop Artist. Summer Walker’s emotional song “Heart of a Woman” won the BET Her Award, echoing the connection many fans feel with her music.
On the film and TV side, Cynthia Erivo won Best Actress, and Denzel Washington was honored as Best Actor. The biopic Luther: Never Too Much was named Best Movie, celebrating talent in storytelling.
In a heartfelt moment, Blue Ivy Carter received the YoungStars Award, highlighting her growing influence in the industry. She’s following in the footsteps of her parents, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, making her mark in both performance and fashion.
Athletic achievements were honored too. Angel Reese, with her impressive basketball skills, was named Sportswoman of the Year, and Jalen Hurts earned Sportsman of the Year for his leadership in the NFL.
As the BET Awards marked their 25th anniversary and the network’s 45th year celebrating Black culture, the show symbolized more than just awards. It was a tribute to legacy, progress, and the bright future of Black excellence.
Did you know that the BET Awards have evolved significantly since their inception in 2001? In the past, awards shows often overlooked Black artists. The BET Awards helped change that narrative, bringing Black talent into the spotlight. In 2021, for instance, Variety reported that viewers gravitated towards platforms that celebrate diverse voices, showing a growing demand for inclusivity.
These cultural milestones remind us of the ongoing journey for recognition and respect in the industry, making events like the BET Awards crucial in shaping the future of entertainment.
