In 2022, Janice Pettyjohn made history as the first woman hired full-time by Howard University’s football program. Fast forward three years, and she’s now the Director of Player Personnel and On-Campus Recruiting, playing a crucial role in the team’s success.

Her story mirrors the growth of the Bison football team. In her early years, she helped guide the team to MEAC championships in 2022 and 2023. Her skills in recruiting and operations have been pivotal in shaping those winning seasons. Janice’s recruiting strategy focuses on the DMV area—Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. She believes in keeping local talent at home. “We want to keep the superstars close,” she shared with Andscape. Her influence isn’t just about logistics. Senior lineman Darius Fox feels her impact personally, stating, “She helped me focus on more than just football. We’ve truly become a family.” Fox has been essential to the team’s offensive success, particularly in their championship runs.

Janice’s contributions haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2025, she participated in the NFL Women’s Forum, which focuses on elevating women in football leadership roles. According to the NFL, only 24% of coaching positions are held by women, highlighting the importance of initiatives like this.
