“Without its international students, Harvard is not Harvard.” This statement was made during a lawsuit against the Trump administration, which aimed to limit international student enrollment at the university. Fortunately, a judge quickly intervened, stopping that effort. This comes as the number of international students in U.S. colleges and universities has reached record levels.

According to the Open Doors® 2024 Report, there are over 1.1 million international students currently studying in the U.S., marking a 7% increase from last year. Scott Weinhold, from the Department of State, highlighted the importance of these ties, saying they foster future relationships in business, science, and government.

India leads the way, sending around 331,000 students to American universities, followed by China with more than 277,000. Together, these two countries account for over half of all international students in the U.S.

International students are not only a significant presence in classrooms but also an economic powerhouse. Their contributions to the economy totaled a remarkable $43.8 billion during the last academic year, creating around 378,000 jobs. Fanta Aw, the executive director of NAFSA, emphasized the need for U.S. policies that attract and retain this talent. As competition for global talent increases, Aw cautioned against taking international contributions for granted.

At Harvard specifically, nearly 25% of the student body consists of international students from over 140 countries. These students enrich campus life and contribute to various sports. For the 2024-2025 year, around 21% of student athletes come from abroad, showcasing their diverse impacts.

The F-1 visa program has allowed international students to study in the U.S. for 70 years, a vital avenue for many students wishing to pursue higher education. Harvard, like many other institutions, has successfully participated in this exchange.
