Rays Make Headlines: Paul Gervase Joins the Team!

The Tampa Bay Rays have called up right-handed pitcher Paul Gervase from Triple-A, as announced by the team. In a related move, they’ve optioned Connor Seabold to Triple-A Durham. If Gervase takes the mound, it will mark his MLB debut.

Gervase was drafted by the Mets in the 12th round of the 2022 draft but was traded to the Rays last summer in exchange for Tyler Zuber. At 6-foot-10, he’s an impressive figure on the field, but he faced challenges with his control while with the Mets, walking 15.5% of the batters he faced. However, during 15 appearances at Double-A Montgomery last August and September, he managed to strike out 31 batters while only walking three. While Gervase had a rough start in spring training, his recent performance at Triple-A has been encouraging. After walking seven batters in four games, he turned things around, striking out 43 while walking just three over his last 27 1/3 innings. His ERA during this stretch is 3.29, with an equally strong FIP of 3.24.

He joins a Rays bullpen that leads the American League with a 3.11 ERA, and he will aim to make a lasting impression. Connor Seabold, who was recalled on June 19, had a solid outing with three scoreless innings against the Orioles but will return to Triple-A, likely as a depth option for innings.
