Tragic Lake Tahoe Boat Capsize Claims Lives of Family of Four, Including DoorDash Executive

Four family members from Northern California were sadly among the eight lives lost when a boat capsized on Lake Tahoe during a sudden thunderstorm over the weekend.

Josh Pickles, 37, worked at DoorDash in San Francisco. He, along with his parents—Terry, 73, and Paula, 71—and his uncle Peter, 72, tragically died after their boat flipped Saturday afternoon. In a heartfelt statement, Josh’s widow, Jordan, expressed the profound sadness the family feels, saying, “No words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost during what was meant to be a joyful time.”

Two individuals were rescued when the boat overturned, but details about their conditions have not been released yet. The ill-fated vessel had ten people on board and capsized near DL Bliss State Park. Initial reports indicated high winds and significant waves—over 8 feet—caught many off guard. Six bodies were recovered on Saturday, with additional search efforts locating the last victim by Monday.

The violent storm surprised officials, with meteorologist Matthew Chyba from the National Weather Service noting that wind speeds reached up to 35 mph. He explained that colder temperatures may have created unstable air, leading to the unexpected severity of the storm.

While accidents on Lake Tahoe happen, they usually involve fewer fatalities. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department revealed average summer fatalities on the lake sit around six, though a record 15 deaths occurred in 2021.
