Government Takes Bold Steps to Safeguard Nigeria’s Coastlines: Latest Updates on Environmental Protection and Climate Change

The Nigerian government is stepping up its efforts to safeguard the nation’s coastlines. They recently introduced a new plan called the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Policy. This initiative aims to protect and sustainably use Nigeria’s coastal and marine resources.

Speaking at a workshop in Abuja, Mr. Mahmud Kambari, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, highlighted the importance of this policy. He emphasized that the coastlines are not just ecologically vital. They also play a major economic role, providing livelihoods and supporting trades while being a hub of biodiversity.

Unfortunately, these coastal areas face significant challenges. Climate change, rising sea levels, poor land practices, and pollution threaten their health. Kambari urged everyone—policymakers, researchers, and the private sector—to actively participate in shaping this policy. He stressed the need for evidence-driven planning that considers the needs of vulnerable coastal communities.

Mr. Usman Bokani, the Director of Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management, further stressed the urgency of the situation. He pointed out that erosion, flooding, and pollution are damaging infrastructure and harming people in coastal regions. The ICZM policy aims to offer a new, structured approach to managing these critical ecosystems.

Statistics show that coastal regions are home to about 70% of Nigeria’s population and contribute significantly to the country’s economy. According to a recent report by the World Bank, without proper management, coastal flooding could displace over 1.5 million people in Nigeria by 2050.

This policy is not just about protection; it’s about improving life for people in coastal communities. Effective management can boost economic resilience and enhance overall quality of life. By working together and making smart decisions, Nigeria can create a stronger and more sustainable coastal management system.
