Doctors have advised Abdul Carter against foot surgery, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Carter, a standout from Penn State and a strong candidate for the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, has a stress reaction in his right foot. Initially, there were concerns that he might need surgery after recent tests, but further scans showed a clearer picture.
Now, instead of surgery, Carter will participate in Penn State’s pro day on March 28. Rosenhaus told ESPN that the injury shouldn’t affect Carter’s draft prospects. “I fully believe this will be a non-factor in where he’s drafted,” he said. “He will impress at his pro day.” This is good news for Carter, who was already expected to skip the NFL scouting combine due to a shoulder injury sustained in a December playoff game against Boise State.
During the combine, Carter focused on medical exams and team interviews, as defensive linemen and linebackers kicked off the event. This week’s schedule included medical evaluations and team meetings, with on-field workouts for some players happening at Lucas Oil Stadium.
On Wednesday, Carter shared his thoughts on being the top pick in April’s draft. “I feel like I’m the best player in the country and the best player should be picked first,” he stated. He credited his training with his father and the sacrifices they’ve made together. Although he mentioned feeling “about 90% right now,” he did not discuss the specifics of his foot during the session.
Carter is highly rated among draft analysts. He ranks No. 2 on Mel Kiper Jr.’s Big Board and holds the No. 1 spot in Matt Miller’s rankings. Jordan Reid also places him at No. 2. With his talent and determination, many expect Carter to make a strong impression as he prepares for the draft.
