Ben-Gurion University Unveils Innovative Medical School for New Immigrants, Thanks to Plastics Tycoon Sami Sagol’s Generous Funding

Israel is facing a doctor shortage, especially as many doctors from the 1990s Russian immigration are set to retire. To tackle this issue, the newly established Sagol Medical School for International Health has launched a four-year program. This school is a collaboration between Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and the Sagol Network, focusing on modern medical education, public health, and advanced technologies.

What distinguishes this program? Unlike typical six-year medical programs in Israel, which target students without bachelor’s degrees, this one is designed for those who have already completed a degree. This makes it more accessible to new immigrants, although it’s open to all Israeli citizens. Professor Alan Jotkowitz, the school’s director, highlights its unique focus on practical global health and integrated learning.

This initiative comes after the Israeli government decided to limit international medical school slots, prioritizing training for local students. Currently, there are about 160 students enrolled in this new program.

Ben-Gurion University, positioned in southern Israel’s Beersheva, and the Sagol Network aim to revolutionize medical training. “Health is a dynamic field,” Jotkowitz said. By emphasizing preventive care and integrating cutting-edge technologies, the program hopes to teach future doctors how to prevent diseases, not just treat them.

Jotkowitz also pointed out the global interconnectedness of health. “What happens in one country can impact others,” he explained. In addition, the Sagol Network’s financial support will help develop a curriculum that uses artificial intelligence for personalized learning, adapting to each student’s pace.

In Israel, the doctor shortage is felt most in peripheral regions like the Negev. The Sagol Network is committed to addressing this by fostering research and education aimed at creating socially responsible health professionals.

Philanthropist Sami Sagol emphasized the school’s role in realizing David Ben-Gurion’s vision for the Negev, hoping to transform it into a hub for education and health research. The Sagol Medical School aims to not only educate doctors but also contribute to the overall development of the region.
