New Delhi, March 12, 2025 – The Indian government is taking important steps to boost its homegrown defense capabilities. Recently, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract worth Rs 2,906 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the purchase of the Low-level Transportable Radar (LLTR), known as Ashwini. This radar system is designed and developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment of DRDO, making it a significant achievement in India’s defense manufacturing sector.
The LLTR (Ashwini) features advanced technology, allowing it to track a wide range of aerial targets. These include high-speed fighter jets as well as slower objects like drones and helicopters. This radar will greatly enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Air Force.

In a related visit, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi toured BEL’s facilities and discussed the latest defense and weapon systems the company is developing. Admiral Tripathi viewed state-of-the-art technologies related to both the Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) and Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM) projects. He expressed appreciation for BEL’s commitment to cutting-edge technology and its strong role in the Indian defense ecosystem.
Recent statistics illustrate the importance of these developments. In 2023, India’s defense exports reportedly increased by over 25%, showcasing the nation’s growing capabilities in this sector. Moreover, surveys indicate that over 70% of Indians support the push for an indigenous defense industry, reflecting widespread recognition of its significance for national security and economic growth.
