Calgary’s brief spring moment is fading fast. Strong winds are set to hit Sunday afternoon, followed by a forecast of overnight snowfall.
This weekend, people enjoyed warmer weather, with temperatures climbing to 13°C on Sunday. However, winds from the west could reach speeds of 80 km/h in the afternoon before calming down later.
Environment Canada issued a wind warning for Lethbridge, reporting gusts of up to 100 km/h near the Alberta foothills. Areas south of Calgary, like Stavely and Pincher Creek, faced wind gusts between 90 and 110 km/h, as noted by the national weather authority.
In Crowsnest Pass, the RCMP dealt with a semi-truck rollover on Highway 22, which was likely caused by the strong winds. Motorists were urged to be cautious on Highway 22 and Highway 3.
As the winds ease on Sunday evening, a few centimeters of snow are expected overnight. Meteorologist Heather Pimiskern from Environment and Climate Change Canada stated that snowfall would likely begin late Sunday night.
Calgary may get about 2 to 5 cm of snow, much less than areas west of the city, where warnings are in place for accumulations of 20 cm or more. “Calgary is being spared from the worst of it,” Pimiskern added.
This week, Calgarians can expect a sunny break with warmer temperatures. Normal highs for this time of year are around 3°C, but Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to see highs of 10°C and 7°C, respectively.
However, this warm spell won’t last long. A weather system is set to arrive Wednesday night into Thursday, bringing more snow and cooler temperatures, likely dropping between -5°C and -10°C.
Looking ahead, it seems warmer weather will return as March unfolds. “As we move towards mid to late March, we should see temperatures rebounding,” Pimiskern said, noting it’s something to look forward to.
With the weather changing, travelers should check 511 Alberta for current road conditions. Those heading into the mountains for outdoor activities are advised to keep an eye on Avalanche Canada’s website for potential hazards.
