Brave First-Time Mom Champions Heart Health Awareness After Life-Saving Ordeal for Herself and Her Baby

On National Go Red Day, Morgan Sanchez is sharing her story and spreading awareness about heart health, especially for women. Just before she gave birth to her son, Rowan, she faced a life-threatening heart issue.

Rowan, now three months old, has a unique birth story. His mom recalls, “He got to be in a helicopter.” It was a tense moment, with experts on hand to ensure both of them were safe.

All births are special, but Rowan’s journey was particularly alarming. Morgan, 31, from Farmingdale, described the fear she felt for both their lives. “The thought that one of us might not make it was terrifying,” she said.

Before she went into labor, Morgan experienced unusual heart palpitations. Doctors initially dismissed them as normal pregnancy symptoms. However, Cardiologist Dr. Evelina Grayver later revealed that Morgan had a condition called atrial tachycardia.

Things took a serious turn when Morgan was about to be induced. “She could have potentially died, and so could the baby,” Dr. Grayver stated.

While still pregnant, Morgan was flown to North Shore University Hospital’s cardiac unit because she struggled to breathe. Within 48 hours, she underwent an emergency C-section and a procedure called ablation to correct her heart rhythm. At that time, her heart function was critically low, at just 15%.

It’s crucial for women to understand that heart disease is the leading cause of death among new mothers. Pregnancy is a significant stress test for the body, making it essential to monitor health closely.

Dr. Grayver emphasized the importance of listening to your body and advocating for your health. “Don’t ignore symptoms. They could save your life and your baby’s,” added Chris Sanchez, Morgan’s husband.

Today, Morgan’s health has improved significantly. The couple jokes that Rowan will hear many stories about helicopters as he grows up. As part of Go Red Day, Rowan proudly sports a onesie that symbolizes heart health.
