A suspect has been arrested for allegedly firing shots into the lobby of KXTV (ABC10) in Sacramento. The police reported the arrest on Saturday.
The incident happened on Friday, a day after a protest took place outside the station over the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Anibal Hernandezsantana, 64, from Sacramento, faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied building, and negligent discharge of a firearm. The motive behind the shooting is still unclear.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire at around 1:30 p.m. They found that at least three shots were fired at the building from a vehicle passing by. Police were able to identify the car, leading them to Hernandezsantana’s home for his arrest.
Images from the scene show three bullet holes in the lobby window. Fortunately, a person was in the lobby during the shooting but was not hurt.
Hernandezsantana is now in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. In a statement, Tegna, the owner of ABC10, said they are working closely with law enforcement to ensure their employees’ safety.
The protest outside the station was part of broader demonstrations against ABC’s decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Kimmel made remarks about Charlie Kirk. Similar protests occurred outside Disney studios and in Hollywood, where the show is usually filmed. Attendees held signs promoting free speech, with slogans like “First Amendment” and “You’re Next.”
Recently, protests against media censorship have gained traction on social media, reflecting growing sentiments about free speech in entertainment. According to a recent survey, over 60% of Americans believe that media personalities should express their political views freely, even if some may disagree with them.
The situation continues to evolve as discussions about Kimmel’s potential return to the show are ongoing. This incident raises significant questions about the boundaries between media expression and public response, and it highlights the need for dialogue around these critical issues.
