The Cleveland Browns are shaking things up by trading for Kenny Pickett, the quarterback from the Philadelphia Eagles. In this deal, the Browns are giving up a fifth-round pick in 2025 and quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
With Deshaun Watson set to miss a big part of the 2025 season after injuring his Achilles again, the Browns are keen to find a reliable quarterback. They have around $13 million in cap space, which means they need to be smart about their choices. Even though Andrew Berry, the team’s general manager, mentioned that money shouldn’t block good opportunities, the Browns are looking for cost-effective options.
Following this trade, the Browns are likely to add another quarterback to their roster. Names like Daniel Jones, Carson Wentz, and potentially Kirk Cousins are floating around as possible targets.
Kenny Pickett, who will be 27 in June, was a first-round draft pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022. He had a decent start in his first two years, leading the Steelers to a 14-10 record and completing nearly 63% of his passes for a total of 4,474 yards. He threw 13 touchdowns but also had 13 interceptions. Last March, the Steelers traded him to the Eagles, where he became the backup quarterback for Jalen Hurts.
During his time with the Eagles, Pickett started one game and had a solid performance, completing 25 of 42 passes for 291 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Now, he’s entering the final year of his rookie contract and hopes to make a significant impact with the Browns.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson, on the other hand, is 25 and started five games for the Browns. Unfortunately, he had a tough run, going 1-4 with a 52.6% completion rate on 230 attempts. He threw for 880 yards, one touchdown, and ten interceptions, but also showed some promise on the ground with 187 rushing yards.
