A slice of midtown Manhattan — extra particularly the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) — conjures up the up to date, clear aesthetic at Royapettah’s Folly at Amethyst at the moment. For, throughout the gallery stand items of useful art, every with a narrative of their very own.

A smooth, nearly fluid structure introduces each bit – a drink desk that’s merely a dolphin’s tail, which seems to sprout from the bottom, a sequence of paper cuts on paper canvases enclosed in glass, or a single, standing fan with a bamboo base. There is even a lounge chair, that’s nearly Surrealist, paying homage to considered one of Dali’s molten clocks. Titled Modernism +, the show is a lovely window into the intersection of art, design and idea. An area the place aesthetics marries functionality.

Curated by the design agency Neon Attic helmed by Rambha Sheth and Sripriya Ganesan, the show is a collaboration with designers and artists from throughout India, with a shared aesthetic. “Through our projects, we started getting into the art world very seriously. We end up working with a lot of galleries across the country, and some that many might not have heard of. So we thought, why not bring them here.”

The show, which has been within the works for nearly six months, has tastefully curated corners. It is centred round Modernism, an art motion that originated within the late 19th and early 20th century and inspired experimentation, each in type and ideology. It is troublesome to bracket the motion right into a single, linear aesthetic, and the show is conscious of this limitation.

Simply put, the show encapsulates the ideology of a house that Rambha and Sripriya would share, if they’d one. “We had the theme in mind, which was shared with the artists who customised their work according to their narrative,” provides Rambha. They felt that the entire dialogue round design could possibly be much more vibrant in Chennai, and this is an try at that.

The featured artists are an eclectic combine of recent age and season design corporations, as nicely artists from the nation : Vahe, Nama Home, Rhizome, Andblack, Length Breadth Height, Eitri, Java Homes, Rutva Joshi Design, Cultivate Art, 079 Stories, Shailesh Rajput, Harshita Jamthank, Arvind Sundar, Pradeep Ahirwar, Upasana Asrani and  Rewati Shahani are a number of names to notice.

Sripriya says, “The designers whose pieces have been featured in the show are truly making an India for the world.” And they work with native Indian artisans to create their items, which was an enormous draw for the curators.

Sripriya and Rambha imagine that there’s loads occurring within the nation, in the case of a design aesthetic. “As a Nation, I think it is difficult for us to be minimalist. It is definitely contemporary though. Now, people are looking for a clean, sleek and practical aesthetic,” says Sripriya. “And they are also looking for a story,” provides Rambha.

The show might be on show at The Folly, Amethyst on September 28.
