The Indianapolis Colts are taking steps to strengthen their defense by signing former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward. The new three-year contract could be worth up to $60 million, with $35 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $20 million, according to Ward’s agents.
In addition to Ward, the Colts are also expected to sign safety Camryn Bynum when free agency opens on Wednesday.
Ward, who is 28 years old, had a challenging season with the 49ers. He missed three games to cope with the heartbreaking loss of his infant daughter. Despite his personal struggles, he played well in the games he appeared in, even sitting out a December game to welcome his son into the world.
After his time with the 49ers, Ward spoke candidly about his grief. He expressed that returning to the Bay Area might be difficult due to the trauma he experienced. He revealed that he still deals with post-traumatic stress, which affects his nights.
Before his challenges off the field, Ward enjoyed success with the 49ers. He was one of their top signings in 2022, having a standout performance in the following seasons. In 2023, he earned his first Pro Bowl selection and a second-team All-Pro honor, tallying 72 tackles, five interceptions, and a forced fumble.
The 49ers had to make tough choices regarding their cornerbacks, especially with Deommodore Lenoir also up for a new contract. Ultimately, they chose to extend Lenoir for five years, making it unlikely for them to keep Ward as well.
Throughout his seven-season career, starting with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018, Ward has made a significant impact in the league with 10 interceptions and 70 passes defended.
