FRISCO, Texas — The Cowboys have made their first big move of the 2025 offseason by signing running back Javonte Williams from the Broncos. He’ll join the team on a one-year deal when the new league year kicks off.
At the NFL combine in Indianapolis, head coach Brian Schottenheimer talked about the qualities he wants in a running back for his offensive setup. This focus seems to play a key role for the Cowboys in 2025.
Schottenheimer emphasized the need for players with vision and balance. “You have to be able to make hidden yards,” he said, highlighting the tough defenses they face. Whether dealing with safeties or linebackers, a running back has to power through tackles.
Javonte Williams brings that strength. So far in his career, he’s rushed for an impressive 1,777 yards after contact and has evaded 134 tackles. He’s ready to enhance these stats with the Cowboys.
At just 24, Williams was drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of North Carolina and has played all four of his seasons with the Broncos. He’s totaled 2,394 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in 54 games, averaging 4 yards per carry.
Last season, Williams shined in the passing game, recording career highs with 52 catches and 346 receiving yards. This brought his all-purpose yardage to 859 yards in 2024, alongside four total touchdowns. Schottenheimer also values this versatility in his running backs.
“You need players who can catch the ball out of the backfield,” he said. He explained that if defenses focus on stopping the run, running backs must be ready to catch passes and make plays after the catch.
With Williams joining the team, the Cowboys are adding youthful energy and depth to a running back lineup that only had Deuce Vaughn signed as of the offseason. This raises questions about their draft strategy for running backs and the future of Rico Dowdle on the team.
