Mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo got a warm reception as he accepted the endorsement from Teamsters Local 237, a public service workers’ union.
On Thursday, Cuomo faced reporters for the first time since starting his campaign for mayor. “I think my record speaks for itself,” he stated confidently.
When asked about his biggest mistakes as governor, Cuomo chose not to talk about his resignation or the controversies surrounding sexual harassment allegations and nursing home policies during the pandemic. Instead, he mentioned wanting to increase police presence at the MTA and improve pandemic preparedness. He also reflected, “Sometimes I took everything too seriously.”
Cuomo addressed the topic of congestion pricing, stating he supports it as a long-term solution but questioned its timing, given the city’s ongoing recovery from COVID-19. “We’re in a fragile time right now. We’re still trying to get back to full occupancy,” he added.
Standing by Cuomo’s side was former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., who joined the growing list of local leaders backing the former governor.
Recent polling from Quinnipiac shows Cuomo leading among Democratic candidates with 31% support. However, other candidates aren’t holding back on their criticisms. Former City Comptroller Scott Stringer joked at a press conference, “Let’s give Andrew Cuomo credit because he brought the warm weather from wherever he was living.”
City Comptroller Brad Lander chimed in on the discussion of ranked choice voting and encouraged voters, saying, “I’m a fan of the dream strategy. Don’t rank Eric or Andrew.”
