Discover Sweden’s Hidden Gem: A Must-Visit Destination for Food and Culture Enthusiasts!

Österlen, in southern Sweden, is often called Sweden’s hidden gem. With its picturesque rolling hills, stunning coastlines, and quaint villages, it resembles the beauty of Tuscany or Provence. Just an hour and a half from Malmö and a short drive from Copenhagen, it’s a perfect getaway.

There’s a culinary scene blossoming here, led by renowned chef Daniel Berlin. After closing his two-star Michelin restaurant, Daniel Berlin Krog, in 2020, he opened Vyn in October 2023. Just months later, it earned two stars in the Nordic Michelin Guide.

Vyn, which means “the view,” offers breathtaking sights of Skåne’s lush landscapes leading down to the Baltic Sea. The restaurant focuses on local ingredients with a fresh, unpretentious approach. Besides fine dining, there’s a wine bar serving Swedish-style tapas and a cozy 15-room hotel.

Österlen is also famous for its agriculture, particularly its apples. About 80% of Sweden’s apple orchards are located near the charming village of Kivik. Be sure to try the local cider and juice from Kiviks Musteri, a family-run business with generations of apple-growing expertise.

Not far from Kivik lies Fruktstereo, which specializes in organic wines and ciders. There’s also a regenerative farm operated by a French farmer, where he grows everything from tomatoes to melons, taking full advantage of Österlen’s favorable climate. Even saffron is being cultivated here, with Österlenssaffran using innovative technology to redefine the saffron harvesting process.

Chef Berlin reflects on the region’s beauty: “Everything is in our surroundings—the producers and what we serve in the restaurant.” He emphasizes the area’s long growing seasons and how they contribute to the quality of the food served at Vyn.

For those who want to indulge in delicious food, Österlen offers various dining choices. Vyn features local dishes made with responsibly sourced ingredients. Chef Berlin’s approach to cuisine respects the ecosystem while delivering mouth-watering flavors. His menu includes creations like milk-fed lamb cooked on an open fire, showcasing every part of the animal. Diners can also enjoy rich local langoustine or perfectly balanced scallop dishes.

Another must-visit is Gamla Bageriet. Set in an old train station, this bakery serves warm sourdough and delightful cardamom rolls, making it a local favorite. Meanwhile, for excellent pizza, check out Gustafs på Österlen. Here, you can enjoy tasty Neapolitan-style pizzas while listening to local music.

For a more rustic experience, visit Talldungen in Brösarps Backar. They offer Mediterranean-inspired dishes made with local ingredients, all paired with an impressive wine selection.

But Österlen isn’t just about food. Culture thrives here, especially in towns like Simrishamn and Ystad. Simrishamn is a charming fishing village with pastel buildings and cobbled streets, while Ystad is famous for its picturesque old town and as the setting for the Wallander detective series.

Nature lovers will appreciate Sandhammaren beach, known for its golden sands, and Ales Stenar, a stunning stone formation resembling a Viking ship. For history buffs, a visit to Kåseholm Castle is worthwhile, where you can explore a beautifully restored 17th-century estate.

Accommodations range from Vyn’s stylish hotel to other inviting choices. Vyn is more than just fine dining; it offers a comfortable boutique hotel experience. Guests can enjoy a traditional Swedish breakfast and savory Nordic dishes at the wine bar.

As Österlen continues to bloom with culinary excellence and rich culture, it’s clear this region has something special to offer. Whether it’s the delicious local food, breathtaking landscapes, or cultural experiences, Österlen is a place to explore and enjoy!
