KLICKITAT, Wash. — Fishery managers are putting tight limits on salmon fishing in the Klickitat River due to a worrying forecast for the spring Chinook return in 2025.
They expect only about 1,201 adult spring Chinook to return, which could be one of the lowest numbers we’ve seen since 2009, as stated by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
To manage this situation, the WDFW has lowered the daily limit to one hatchery fish for anglers fishing in the lower Klickitat River. The salmon season in this area will close starting May 22, and the upper river fishing will be on hold until further notice.
From April 1 to May 21, 2025, anglers can fish between the BNSF Railroad Bridge and Fisher Hill Bridge. During this time, you can keep up to two salmon and hatchery steelhead, but only one can be an adult salmon. It’s important to note that caught fish must be a minimum of 12 inches and any wild Chinook must be released back into the water.
Fishing will be allowed only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Additionally, the area from 400 feet upstream of the #5 fishway to the Klickitat Salmon Hatchery will be off-limits for salmon fishing starting May 24, 2025, until further notice.
