Sri Lanka is set to honor India by referring to it as the "Republic of Bharat" on special plaques during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit this weekend, according to local reports.

These plaques will mark three India-supported projects. They include the launch of the Sampur solar energy project, a new cold storage facility in Dambulla, and the installation of 5,000 rooftop solar panels at religious sites across Sri Lanka. While the plaques will use the name "Bharat," official communications from Sri Lanka will still refer to "India."

The Indian government has been increasingly using "Bharat" in its official documents. This name, which has ancient roots, was featured on invitations sent to dignitaries during the 2023 G20 Summit in India.

This shift was also noted during Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to India last December, where Indian authorities addressed President Droupadi Murmu as the President of Bharat.

Prime Minister Modi is currently attending the BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand and will travel to Sri Lanka from April 4 to 6 at the gracious invitation of President Dissanayake. The two leaders will discuss advancements in their collaborative efforts under the Joint Vision for "Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future," which was established during Dissanayake’s December visit to India.

During his trip, Modi will also meet other senior officials and political leaders. They plan to inaugurate development projects in Anuradhapura that are made possible through Indian funding.

Modi’s last visit to Sri Lanka was in 2019, while President Dissanayake’s recent trip to India was his first as President.

The ties between India and Sri Lanka run deep, marked by shared history and culture. This visit represents a significant step in strengthening the multifaceted relationship between the two nations, according to statements from the Ministry of External Affairs.
