New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have made significant progress by successfully testing the Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM), an innovative underwater naval mine. This development aims to boost the Indian Navy’s capacity to counter modern stealth ships and submarines.
The MIGM was created by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory in Visakhapatnam, collaborating with other DRDO labs, including the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory in Pune and the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh. Bharat Dynamics Limited from Visakhapatnam and Apollo Microsystems Limited from Hyderabad are the production partners for this advanced system.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised both the DRDO and the Indian Navy, noting that this mine enhances the Navy’s undersea warfare abilities. Following the testing, Dr. Samir V Kamat, Chairman of DRDO, confirmed that the MIGM is now ready for operational deployment within the Indian Navy.
In related news, on May 3, the DRDO successfully completed the maiden flight trials of a stratospheric airship platform from Sheopur in Madhya Pradesh. Developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment, this airship soared to around 17 km carrying an instrumental payload. The flight lasted approximately 62 minutes, during which data was collected to refine models for future high-altitude airship missions. Rajnath Singh also congratulated DRDO for this achievement, stating it positions India among the few nations with such sophisticated indigenous capabilities.
The advancements in these technologies are crucial as naval warfare evolves, and countries invest in better systems to maintain their defense capabilities. Naval mines like the MIGM not only serve as deterrents but also represent a strategic asset in undersea engagements.
