Ed Sheeran surprised fans in Bangalore, India, with a spontaneous street performance over the weekend. However, the fun was cut short when police intervened, claiming he had not secured the necessary permissions.

The Grammy-winning artist was taking a break between shows when he decided to sing on Church Street. He started his performance with “Shape of You,” but midway through, an officer unplugged his equipment, leaving Sheeran visibly frustrated.

Local authorities stated they had denied Sheeran permission to perform in that bustling area. A nearby resident alerted the police once the music began, leading to the swift intervention.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shekhar H. Tekkannavar, explained that Church Street is always crowded. “We try to keep the people moving there,” he mentioned.

Despite this, Sheeran asserted on Instagram that they had been granted permission for the gig. He clarified, “The street performance was planned out before; it wasn’t just us randomly turning up.”

The unexpected event quickly gained traction on social media, with fans sharing snippets of the performance. One user expressed excitement, saying, “Went for a casual walk on Church Street and stumbled upon Ed Sheeran performing live. What a city!”

Online reactions varied, with many criticizing the local authorities. Some argued that a brief performance was harmless and that officials should focus on pressing issues like traffic and water shortages in the city, which has a population of around 14 million.

Ed Sheeran enjoys a strong fan base in India. He performed to a sold-out crowd in Mumbai last year and has more shows lined up in the country before heading to China and the UAE.
