Researchers conducted a study focused on the health needs of gender diverse young people in the Te Tai Tokerau region of Aotearoa, New Zealand. This research, detailed in the Journal of Pediatrics and Child Health, looked into the experiences of tamariki and rangatahi accessing Pediatric Hauora Tāhine services from January 2020 to June 2023.
The team analyzed records from patients referred to the Te Tai Tokerau General Pediatric Department for Hauora Tāhine care. Key areas examined included medical management, wait times for assessments, access to mental health support, and fertility counseling.
The findings revealed that 45 young individuals received Hauora Tāhine care, with an average referral age of 13 years. Of these, 10 (22%) identified as Māori. It was noted that a significant number of these youths faced additional mental health challenges. Specifically, 27 (60%) had co-existing mental health diagnoses, and 14 (31%) were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Alarmingly, 5 (11%) had previously attempted suicide.
Patients typically waited about 90 days for their first appointment, although this varied widely. All young people received psychological support; however, 15 (33%) didn’t require medical gender-affirming treatment. For those needing intervention, 68% were prescribed pubertal suppression medication, while gender-affirming hormones were given to 11 (24%).
The study underscores that gender diverse youth need a range of treatments to support their identities. Furthermore, the high prevalence of mental health issues and ASD highlights the importance of tailored care.
In today’s world, more young people are identifying as gender diverse. A recent survey from the Trevor Project showed that 42% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered suicide in the past year, indicating a pressing need for supportive health services.
It’s crucial to create environments where these young individuals feel safe and welcomed. This study demonstrates the importance of understanding their unique health needs.
