MONTGOMERY, Ala. – An Alabama State University alumna is traveling across the nation to empower women. She’s hosting a conference focused on leadership, branding, and embracing individuality. This event kicks off a nationwide tour that will visit historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) throughout the United States.

DiDi Hughes, inspired during her own homecoming at Alabama State, is eager to give back to the young women at HBCUs, starting with her alma mater. "We wanted to share our resources and experiences to create a positive impact," she shared.
At the conference, panelists shared their personal stories to inspire attendees as they prepare for adulthood. They discussed important issues affecting women today, including self-esteem, personal branding, and safety.
Bishop Donna Hubbard, a human trafficking survivor, highlighted a staggering statistic: "There are 24 million people trapped in human trafficking worldwide. Over 70% are women of color, and more than 80% are women overall." She emphasized how crucial it is for women to be informed to protect themselves.
For ASU student Tiffany Davis, the conference was an eye-opener. "I learned that my words and actions have power," she said. Davis left feeling motivated to share this knowledge with her peers. "Be yourself and embrace where you come from," she advised.
As part of the tour, a scholarship will be awarded at each conference in honor of Hughes’ late mother, who dedicated her life to education and supporting HBCUs.
Empowering women in today’s world is vital, especially in light of growing statistics around issues like human trafficking. A report by the Global Slavery Index indicates that millions remain vulnerable. Events like these aim to change that narrative by educating and uplifting young women, preparing them for a brighter future.
