Brevin Cassella and Cory Day are set for the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships, having just learned their matchups. Cassella, entering as the No. 6 seed at 174 lbs, will face No. 27 Jasiah Queen from Drexel. Meanwhile, Day, seeded 19th, will take on No. 14 Gavin Hoffman from Lock Haven.
This is a big moment for Cassella, marking his fourth appearance at nationals. After winning his first EIWA championship last weekend, he made history as the first Bearcat to snag an individual conference title since Lou DePrez’s last win in 2022. Cassella also earned the EIWA Coaches’ Trophy, a prestigious nod for being the tournament’s outstanding wrestler, making him the first Bearcat to receive this honor. His victory at the finals against Navy’s Danny Wask was especially notable; it was his 100th career win.
Currently, Cassella has a record of 25-4 and is gearing up to take on Queen for the first time. Earlier in the season, during a match with Drexel, Queen had a solid showing by defeating Cassella’s teammate, Roberto Padilla.
Day, a graduate student, is entering his third NCAA tournament after achieving a career-best second place at EIWAs. He has a record of 20-6 and stands out among Division I wrestlers, ranking fourth in falls this season with a personal-best 13. In a prior matchup, Day and Hoffman faced each other, and Hoffman clinched a 6-3 victory.
Both athletes are looking to help Binghamton reach the podium at nationals for the first time since 2021. That year, DePrez finished eighth at 184 lbs. Overall, Binghamton has seen six Division I All-Americans since its debut in the NCAA tournament in 2002. Notably, Donnie Vinson achieved the highest finish, placing third at 149 lbs in 2012.
The NCAA Wrestling Championships will take place from March 20-22 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Cassella and Day will start their journeys on March 20 at noon.
As the anticipation builds, it’s evident that the Binghamton community is rallying behind its wrestlers. Fans on social media are sharing their support, with many expressing excitement for Cassella’s potential to continue breaking records and for Day’s chance to shine. This tournament not only highlights personal achievements but also represents a significant moment for Binghamton wrestling.
