Exciting Launch: Titagarh-BHEL JV Unveils Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Production Line in Kolkata!

Kolkata, India: A new chapter in Indian Railways has begun. Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) have launched a modern production line for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains in Uttarpara, Kolkata. This is a significant step for India’s rail manufacturing industry.

The inauguration saw key officials, including Umesh Chowdhary from TRSL and Bani Varma from BHEL, celebrating this achievement. They are set to produce 80 Vande Bharat Sleeper train sets as part of a ₹24,000 crore contract from Indian Railways. This initiative is part of the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat efforts, aiming to boost local manufacturing and reduce imports.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will be India’s first semi-high-speed train with sleeper configurations, enhancing long-distance travel. Designed to offer a comfortable overnight experience, it features:

  • Spacious, modern coach layouts
  • Smart, energy-efficient onboard systems
  • Robust safety features for high reliability
  • Capabilities to reach speeds up to 160 km/h

The prototype is expected to be ready by 2026, with full production following soon after.

The new facility in Uttarpara represents the forefront of rail manufacturing. With advanced automation and robotic assembly lines, it can produce both stainless steel and aluminum coaches. Currently, it has the capacity to manufacture 300 coaches per year, which will soon expand to 850 to meet growing demand.

“This is a proud moment for the Titagarh Rail Systems-BHEL teams. This project exemplifies how public and private sectors can unite for innovation, contributing to a self-reliant India,” said Umesh Chowdhary.

This initiative is not just about trains; it symbolizes a transformation in India’s rail infrastructure, promising faster, safer travels for millions. With Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains planned for major routes like Delhi–Howrah, passengers can anticipate a distinctly Indian travel experience ahead.

As recent data shows, over 23% of Indian Railways customers prioritize comfort and safety in train travel. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains aim to deliver on these expectations, highlighting India’s commitment to modern transportation.

Stay tuned for more developments on the rollout and routes of these innovative trains.
