Quarterback Trey Lance is joining the Los Angeles Chargers on a one-year deal that could be worth up to $6.2 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. With this move, Lance and Taylor Heinicke will serve as backups to Justin Herbert, the Chargers’ starting quarterback.
Justin Herbert has had an impressive career so far, starting 62 games in a row at one point, which was one of the longest active streaks in the NFL. However, his 2023 season ended abruptly due to a fracture in his right index finger. Prior to that injury, he had played through various issues, including plantar fasciitis and a high ankle sprain.
Lance’s addition is a significant move for the Chargers. He provides a solid backup option alongside Heinicke, who saw limited action last season. With Easton Stick, the previous third-string quarterback, likely out of the picture, Lance will have the chance to step up if Herbert needs to take time off again.
Drafted third overall in 2021 by the San Francisco 49ers, Lance’s journey has been filled with ups and downs. In the two years he spent with the 49ers, he started just four games, finishing with a 2-2 record. Injuries have hindered his progress, including a severe ankle injury that opened the door for quarterback Brock Purdy to take his place and ultimately lead the team effectively.
In 2023, the Dallas Cowboys traded for Lance but he did not see any game action until the final game of the regular season in 2024. In that game against the Washington Commanders, he completed 20 of 34 passes for 244 yards, but didn’t score a touchdown and led his team to a narrow loss.
Despite his challenges, there is still a lot of potential in Lance. At just 24 years old, he is younger than some of the recent first-round quarterback picks like Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. Former coach Mike McCarthy mentioned that Lance simply needs to gain more experience, as he played only 19 games in college at North Dakota State.
This signing could be a turning point for Lance, as he looks to redeem his career and prove his worth in the NFL.
