Samsung’s Bright New OCF OLED Panel for Phones

This latest OLED panel is designed without a polarizer, a component typically used in screens. Known as on-cell film (OCF), this innovative technology is a first from Samsung Display. By removing the polarizer, the OCF panel significantly improves visibility outdoors and lowers power consumption. This leads to better battery life, cooler temperatures, and a longer lifespan for devices.

This OCF technology isn’t new; it has already been used in popular foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. But now, it’s expanding to bar-shaped smartphones and even rollable laptops.

At MWC 2025, Samsung is showcasing its OCF II OLED mobile panels, which can hit a peak brightness of 5,000 nits in a 10% area of the screen. This is noteworthy since competitors, especially Chinese manufacturers, claim brightness levels of up to 6,000 nits, but typically only for much smaller screen areas.

When it comes to watching videos, this panel can shine at a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. Samsung claims this is 1.5 times higher than previous models, yet uses the same amount of power. If true, this marks a significant advancement in display technology.

A polarizer usually blocks outside light from entering a display, but it can cut brightness by up to 50%. Samsung has created a unique stack method that lets them bypass the polarizer altogether while still blocking outside light. This means displays can maintain high brightness levels with just 63% of the usual power, making the panels 20% thinner than standard OLED screens. Initially seen in the Galaxy Z Fold 3, this technology is now making a mark in regular smartphones.

Joohyung Lee, head of Samsung Display’s mobile segment, stated that the company will keep pushing the boundaries through innovations like OCF to meet the demands of today’s AI-driven world.
