The Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies at Fairfield University has introduced a groundbreaking Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program, the first of its kind in Connecticut. This online, low-residency program is now open for applications, with classes set to start in September 2025.

“Launching this DrPH program is a major step in empowering future public health leaders,” said Anthony Santella, the program director. “We blend academic rigor with the convenience of online learning, making advanced education more accessible and impactful in the field of public health.”
This part-time program is designed for individuals who already possess a master’s degree or higher in any discipline. It can be completed in 33 to 44 months. Students will engage in coursework online at their own pace and attend three in-person residencies in Washington, D.C., and at Fairfield’s campuses in Austin, Texas, and Connecticut.
Public health is more crucial than ever. A recent study by the World Health Organization showed that over 80% of health professionals believe better training can lead to significant improvements in health outcomes globally. This DrPH program aims to address this need by equipping students with the skills to tackle real-world challenges in public health.
Current trends in public health emphasize the importance of leadership and adaptability. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in the healthcare system, fueling demand for public health education that is practical and responsive. Programs like Fairfield’s DrPH are responding to this call.
This initiative is not just about education; it’s about creating leaders who can influence public policy and implement innovative health strategies. As Anthony Santella puts it, “We are ready to train the next wave of public health champions.”
