Five top European institutions in agriculture, food, and life sciences have come together to form the European Science Alliance for Agriculture and Food (ESAAF). This coalition aims to strengthen the resilience and transformation of the EU agri-food sector.
The core mission of ESAAF is to build sustainable and competitive food systems. It will provide vital scientific insights to help European decision-makers tackle major policy challenges, as announced in a press release.
ESAAF will serve as a platform for independent, evidence-based input. This ensures that future policies are backed by solid scientific research. “Science must be central to changing Europe’s food systems,” said Sjoukje Heimovaara, president of Wageningen University & Research. She emphasized that the alliance will bridge research and policy, enabling the EU to address complex agri-food issues effectively.
Philippe Mauguin, CEO of INRAE, pointed out that while Europe is improving its agricultural research ecosystem, there is still no unified way to engage with this research at a European level.
Eskild Holm Nielsen, Dean of Faculty of Technical Sciences at Aarhus University, added that the alliance will enhance the connection between research and policy, benefiting all of Europe. He believes that the scientific expertise ESAAF provides will be crucial in transforming the agri-food sector.
The founding members of ESAAF are:
- Aarhus University (AU) – Denmark
- Julius Kühn-Institut (JKI) – Germany
- National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE) – France
- Wageningen University & Research (WUR) – The Netherlands
- Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS) – Poland
These institutions bring decades of knowledge and innovation to aid EU policymakers. While starting with five members, ESAAF encourages other academic organizations in agriculture and food to join in.
ESAAF’s goal is to represent agricultural and food research in Europe. It aims to provide high-level scientific advice to the European Commission and stakeholders involved with the European Board for Agriculture and Food (EBAF).
Working alongside bodies like the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Science Advice Mechanism (SAM), ESAAF focuses on understanding the complexities of Europe’s food systems. Its approach ensures that the latest scientific developments and regional specifics shape EU policies.
Key Functions of ESAAF Include:
- Delivering timely scientific input for policy discussions
- Acting as a platform for coordinated agri-food research advice across Europe
