Celebrating Innovation in Prosthetics: Dr. MC Das’ Breakthrough
Dr. MC Das, head of the Artificial Limbs Centre at Central Hospital in New Delhi, recently gained international recognition at the 20th World Conference of the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) in Stockholm. His innovative design for a trans-tibial socket and liner won him a €1,000 award. This eco-friendly and cost-effective solution is particularly beneficial in hot and humid climates like India’s.
Dr. Das explained how his design allows airflow and regulates temperature. “This will be a game-changer for patients in humid areas who deal with sweat-related skin issues,” he shared. The conference featured 212 research papers, with only two from India—one being Dr. Das’s titled “Development of Inexpensive and Breathable Trans-Tibial Socket and Liner for Hot and Humid Climate.”
Having authored 21 research papers and presented internationally five times, Dr. Das is well-respected in his field. He noted, “Sockets are key to distributing body weight. A poorly designed socket can cause pain, but our design focuses on comfort and mobility.”
Traditional silicone liners can be prohibitively expensive in India. Dr. Das’s indigenous socket is breathable and designed to meet local needs. “It fits snugly between the amputated limb and the prosthesis, with a soft inner layer to reduce friction and prevent sweat build-up,” he explained. This innovation is not just affordable; it’s tailored for year-round comfort in India.
Dr. Das’s journey began in 1989 when he was one of only 17 students chosen by the National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research. Since then, he has dedicated his career to helping people with limb loss, assisting over 20,000 patients, including athletes and adventurers.
It’s inspiring to see many of his patients thrive, some even competing in the Olympics. His work emphasizes not just the technology behind prosthetics but the profound impact it has on people’s lives.
In a world where innovation meets compassion, Dr. Das stands as a beacon of hope and progress for many.
