Georgetown Scholar Shares Harrowing Experience of ‘Subhuman’ Treatment During ICE Detention

Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral scholar at Georgetown University, has been released from a Texas detention center after months of legal battles. His detention drew significant public attention and raised questions about free speech and due process.

Khan Suri was held without formal charges. A federal judge ruled that his detention violated his rights under the First and Fifth Amendments. Just after his release, Khan Suri expressed his turmoil: “They made a subhuman out of me.” He described a disorienting experience, feeling uncertain about where he was for days and being restrained in unsettling ways.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accused him of promoting antisemitism and communist propaganda on social media. A spokesperson claimed he had ties to a known Hamas advisor. However, the judge highlighted that the government failed to show he posed a flight risk or community danger.

Khan Suri’s journey through the detention system was harrowing. He spent his first days in a dismal facility, sharing that the conditions were unsanitary. He expressed concern for his children, revealing that his eldest son, only nine years old, struggled emotionally during his absence. “I had worried that my kids are suffering because of me,” he said.

His wife, Maphaz Ahmad Yousef, shared her emotional response to the judge’s ruling. She expressed deep gratitude while urging awareness of others still detained under similar conditions. Their case resonates with broader concerns about government transparency regarding immigration policies.

ACLU attorney Sophia Gregg emphasized that this situation reflects an alarming trend. “If they can do this to Dr. Suri, they can do this to anyone,” she stated, arguing for the protection of individual rights regardless of political belief.
