Students of the Department of Fashion and Lifestyle Accessories, NIFT, Hyderabad, who executed the wall art venture

The daring, wavy patterns in pink, blue, yellow and black on the partitions of the recently-inaugurated sports activities advanced are seen from a distance to those that enter the National Institute of Fashion Technology campus in Madhapur, Hyderabad. For almost a month, the students and faculty would start work round nightfall and proceed until 1 or 2am, armed with brushes and paints. The wavy sample resembling the yarn is a metaphor for the textile’s uncooked materials and shuttles’ motion in the badminton courtroom inside the sports activities advanced. The selection of colors — pink, blue, yellow and black — is a nod to the design ethos of the Hyderabad NIFT campus. Inaugurated in 1999, the campus was designed by architect Sanjay Mohe. The spacious campus, designed to permit lots of pure gentle and air flow, is in muted shades of gray, often intercepted by bursts of main colors of pink, yellow and blue.

“For the Hyderabad campus, Mohe’s design inspiration was an outfit designed by Yves Saint Laurent, which was in turn a homage to a Piet Mondrian painting with its striking composition of these colours,” explains Uthaman MK, professor, design and way of life division, who spearheaded the wall art venture.

The planning started someday in April 2023. Uthaman, alongside along with his colleague professor Satya Prakash and the students, brainstormed for the wall art venture. Several themes have been thought of earlier than the wavy sample and colors have been permitted (by Vijay Kumar Mantri, the then campus director of NIFT Hyderabad). Titled ‘Moment and Movements’, the wall art venture aimed to increase Sanjay Mohe’s color theme onto the partitions of the sports activities advanced.
The group created a prototype of the advanced with colored patterns to get a transparent thought of the ultimate output. Professor Satya Prakash and scholar Gaurav Soni helped digitally visualise the venture. Once this was done, we were also able to paint during the day,” she says.
The students state that the wall art venture was an expertise to recollect — from studying to take cautious steps on the logs of the scaffolding to color each inch with care, they needed to execute the plan with ample persistence. It had grow to be an emotional venture that, when it ended, some of them had withdrawal signs. “It was adventurous and fun; we did not feel the strain that we were painting for six to seven hours each day,” some of them chime in.
As the students — Irene, Gaurav, Lokesh, Vanshika, Mrudhula, Meghna, Athulya and Devangi — together with Uthaman and Satya Prakash painted, the wall art took form.
The sports activities advanced was formally inaugurated on January 31 by Tanu Kashyap, director normal, NIFT. Though it primarily homes a badminton courtroom, the area is versatile to be multifunctional.
