The Indian Navy welcomed its eighth and final Missile Cum Ammunition (MCA) Barge, LSAM 11, in Mumbai on March 7. This event took place at the Naval Dockyard, with Commodore Rajesh Bargoti as the chief guest.
This milestone marks the completion of a contract awarded to SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, a small shipyard in Visakhapatnam. With the delivery of LSAM 11, the yard has successfully supplied all eight barges to the Indian Navy, fulfilling its commitment made in February 2021.
The primary purpose of these vessels is to boost the Navy’s logistics capabilities. Designed in collaboration with an Indian ship design firm, the barges underwent thorough testing at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam to ensure they meet seaworthiness standards.
The MCA Barges are built following the rules and regulations of the Indian Register of Shipping. They represent the Government of India’s “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives, reflecting the Navy’s support for local businesses and small enterprises.
So far, seven of these barges have been commissioned and are actively aiding the Indian Navy. They facilitate the transport of ammunition and other supplies, supporting operations both at docks and in deeper waters.
