External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is optimistic about the future of India-U.S. relations. Speaking on January 22, 2025, he noted a clear interest from the new Trump Administration in strengthening ties between the two nations.
Jaishankar was also honored to have attended the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States on January 20. He shared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special envoy was treated with great respect at the event.
While in Washington, Jaishankar met with several members of Trump’s Cabinet, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. He also participated in the first Quad ministerial meeting of the Trump Administration, alongside leaders from Australia, Japan, and the U.S.
Jaishankar pointed out that the Trump Administration is keen to enhance the bilateral relationship with India. Prime Minister Modi had an early call with President Trump, signaling the desire to move forward cooperatively. Jaishankar described the administration’s willingness to build on the existing foundation of cooperation established during Trump’s previous term.
He emphasized that both countries aim to promote easier business, education, and defense collaborations. However, he also raised concerns about visa delays, explaining that lengthy visa processes can hinder business and tourism, which are vital for fostering good relations. He stressed the importance of translating trust between India and the U.S. into a solid partnership.
Jaishankar’s message was clear: both countries need to be bolder and more ambitious in their interactions. He expressed conviction that they could work together effectively to overcome regulatory hurdles, allowing for greater mobility and partnership across various sectors, including technology and defense.
