Jimmy Kimmel recently took a jab at Donald Trump over some wild claims made during Trump’s speech to Congress. He specifically targeted Trump’s assertion that the U.S. government spent $8 million to make mice “transgender.”
In his speech on March 4, Trump complained about various expenditures under Joe Biden’s administration, mentioning things like, “$8 million to promote LGBT+ in Lesotho, $60 million for indigenous peoples in Central America, and $8 million for making mice transgender.” He insisted, “This is real.”
The day after, on his show, Kimmel debunked Trump’s statement. “When you hear the president say we’re spending $8 million on sex changes for mice, you might think, ‘There has to be some truth there,’” Kimmel opened his monologue. “Turns out, it’s not real.”
Kimmel explained that the funding was actually for transgenic mice, which are genetically altered for lab studies on diseases, not anything related to gender identity. “They’re just trying to cure things like dementia, which you’d think Trump would care about,” he added with a laugh.
Kimmel also questioned whether Trump’s team was ignoring the facts or simply didn’t know how to look them up. “Maybe they think we’re all too dumb to Google,” he joked.
During his address, Trump claimed it has been “nothing but swift action” since he took office. Yet, many of his statements were criticized for being misleading or outright false. For example, he repeated an incorrect claim that millions of dead people over 100 years old receive Social Security, which prompted shouts of “Not true!” from some Democrats present.
