Waukesha, Wis. — Graduation Day for Shelter Dogs
This Monday, dogs from the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County (HAWS) will celebrate their “Graduation Day” with students from Carroll University. These dogs have been living with students studying animal behavior as part of a unique program.
For seven semesters, Carroll University has teamed up with HAWS to give shelter dogs a break from the shelter while students learn essential training skills. Throughout the semester, students care for the dogs, helping them adjust to home life. They also share their experiences and progress on the program’s Facebook page.
Since starting in 2020, over 30 dogs have found homes through this initiative. Many students have even adopted their foster dogs. This semester, five dogs—Tristan, Janice, Tucker, Bubbles, and Princess—have all found loving, forever homes.
Programs like this not only benefit the dogs but also teach students valuable life skills, making a positive impact on the community and beyond. According to a recent survey by the ASPCA, nearly 70% of dog owners believe adopting a pet improves their quality of life.
The success of this program highlights the importance of partnerships between educational institutions and animal shelters. With ongoing support, more dogs can find loving homes while students gain hands-on experience.
