MONTGOMERY, Ala. — This Saturday, May 10, marks the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive, organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers. It’s happening in 10,000 cities across the United States, making it the largest one-day food drive in the country.
Participating is easy. Just leave non-perishable food items in a sturdy bag near your mailbox, and your mail carrier will pick them up while delivering your mail. All donations support local food banks, so what you give goes directly to your community. Suggested items include cereal, dry pasta, canned vegetables, soups, and juice.
Once the mail carriers finish their routes, staff and volunteers from the Heart of Alabama Food Bank will collect the donations. They’ll sort and package everything for distribution. It’s a wonderful way to make an immediate impact in your area.
Most letter carriers join in the effort, but participation is optional. If you’re unsure whether your carrier will collect items, check with your local post office. The Heart of Alabama Food Bank is also accepting monetary donations here.
In recent years, food insecurity has grown, affecting millions across the U.S. According to the USDA, nearly 10.5% of American households were food insecure in 2021. Community initiatives like “Stamp Out Hunger” play a vital role in addressing this issue, reminding us all to support our neighbors in need.
So, mark your calendar for Saturday and do your part to help end hunger in your community!
