Women's History Month

Wayne State University is excited to celebrate Women’s History Month this March. The university has declared it with an official proclamation and planned a series of events honoring the achievements and contributions of women throughout history.

Since 1987, March has been recognized as Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on and celebrate the crucial roles women have played in shaping society. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has also proclaimed March as Women’s History Month in Michigan.

This year’s theme is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.” It highlights the power of women in education and inspiration. Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy, president of Wayne State, expressed that Women’s History Month is a time to appreciate the resilience and achievements of women from all backgrounds. She emphasized the contributions of Wayne State’s female students, faculty, staff, and alumni to the community.

Wayne State supports women’s professional growth with programs such as Wayne Women LEAD, the Commission on the Status of Women, and the WSU GEARS program. These initiatives provide mentorship and advocacy, helping women succeed in their academic and professional journeys.

Dawn Pauli, who is involved with Wayne Women LEAD, noted the program helps women carve their unique paths to success. They focus on building skills and creating connections, fostering a community where women can thrive and lead confidently.

Additionally, the university encourages women to join student organizations that focus on mentorship and collaboration between students and faculty.

Sophie Meyer, a sophomore and co-professional chair of Wayne Women in Business, shared how being part of the organization has allowed her to connect with inspiring leaders and peers. She highlighted the importance of building a supportive community to empower one another.

Throughout March, several events are lined up, providing opportunities for learning, networking, and celebration.
