Open Ledger, an innovative accounting software company, has introduced an exciting new game just in time for tax season. Meet PokéTax! This game turns the tedious task of filing taxes into an engaging adventure. Players face off against "Tax Trainers," who resemble gym leaders from Pokémon. Each trainer represents a section of a tax form, like income, deductions, and credits. Through answering questions from these trainers, players can complete their taxes smoothly.

"Once you finish your PokéTax run, we guide you to the IRS Direct File site to officially submit," said Pryce Adade-Yebesi, co-founder of Open Ledger. He assures that this isn’t an elaborate prank. "This is real; it works. Tax fraud isn’t funny — and neither is the IRS," he added.
The game’s concept emerged somewhat playfully. Adade-Yebesi and his co-founder, Ashtyn Bell, initially created it as a lighthearted challenge. They wondered, "Could we actually pull this off?" After securing $3 million in funding led by Kindred Ventures and Black Ventures, they began turning their idea into reality.
A standout feature of PokéTax is its AI assistant, which helps players organize their responses. As players take on the Tax Trainers, they can earn badges and discover new deductions, making the whole experience more enjoyable.
Tax games aren’t common, as few founders think to gamify this usually dreaded process. However, there have been similar attempts, like Tax Heaven 3000, a dating sim that aimed to lighten the mood around taxes last year.
Adade-Yebesi’s goal is clear: he wants to make financial processes “more engaging and way less soul-sucking.” People often feel overwhelmed during tax season, with only about 30% of Americans reportedly feeling confident about their tax knowledge, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Tax Professionals. Changing the way we approach taxes may just reduce that anxiety.
With the tax deadline approaching on April 15, tools like PokéTax offer a refreshing spin on a task many dread. By adding a bit of enjoyment, perhaps it will encourage more people to tackle their taxes head-on, making them feel less daunting.
