Lindsey Vonn is gearing up for an exciting return to competitive skiing. Initially, she aimed to participate as a non-competitive forerunner at the World Championships. However, her recent performances in the World Cup have exceeded her expectations. Now, she’s ready to race and feels confident about her chances in Saalbach, Austria.
Vonn plans to compete in the super-G on Thursday and the downhill event on Saturday. She’s also considering the new team combined event on February 11.
“I’m fast and competitive,” Vonn shared in a press conference. “I feel ready to compete for a medal. That’s what this championship is all about. I hope to be quick enough to stand on the podium.”
After retiring in 2019, Vonn became the oldest woman to win an individual world medal at age 34. Her long career took a toll on her body, especially her right knee, which had several surgeries.
Following a partial knee replacement last April, Vonn returned to skiing pain-free. She described it as “a completely new world.” She stated, “My knee feels incredible. You wouldn’t guess I’ve been racing for the past few weeks.”
Since returning to the World Cup circuit on December 21, Vonn has been performing well, achieving fourth in super-G and sixth in downhill across seven races.
Vonn shared her thoughts on managing pressure in events like the World Championships and the Olympics. “Right now, I don’t feel any pressure. My goal wasn’t to be super competitive this year, but I’m ahead of where I thought I’d be,” she said. “If I finish 10th, that’s fine too. I’m just excited to be here.”
At this year’s championships, Vonn’s record as the oldest woman to win a medal might be challenged by Italian skier Federica Brignone, who is also 34.
Vonn is aware that the Saalbach course might not be her strongest suit, but she plans to assess her competitiveness after training runs. If she does secure a podium spot, it could break not just her own record but the overall record set by Johan Clarey, the oldest male medalist at age 38.
“I like records,” Vonn admitted. “If I can add another one, I’m all for it.”
