Lithuania Takes Bold Step in Climate Action: Joining UN Initiatives in Germany

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 18—The 62nd session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies is underway in Bonn, Germany. This two-week event focuses on vital climate discussions and technical decisions. Attendees include members of Lithuania’s Ministry of the Environment, among others.

This session is crucial as it lays the groundwork for the upcoming COP30 climate summit in Belém, Brazil, set for November 10–30, 2025.

Key Focus Areas

One major topic in Bonn is climate adaptation. The aim is to refine how we measure progress on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), which is part of the Paris Agreement. Insights from expert groups and a special session by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will help strengthen our understanding of climate impacts and adaptation strategies.

Transparency in climate reporting is also crucial. The UNFCCC Secretariat shared updates on tools that countries need to report their climate actions effectively. Negotiators highlighted that developing nations require technical and financial support to produce high-quality reports.

Ongoing Negotiations

Discussions continue on several important issues, first presented at last year’s summit in Baku. These include:

  • Format for the Global Stocktake (GST) implementation dialogue
  • Review of the Warsaw International Mechanism for loss and damage
  • Progress on national climate adaptation plans

Other topics like climate mitigation and a just transition are also on the agenda. The Western European and Others Group (WEOG) is expected to decide which country will host COP31 in 2026, with Australia and Türkiye as contenders.

Bridging Science and Policy

The Bonn session runs from June 16 to 26 and features meetings of two main UNFCCC bodies:

  1. The Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) connects the latest scientific findings, including those from the IPCC, to policy-making.
  2. The Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) monitors the progress of the UNFCCC, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement.

These bodies meet twice a year—in June and during the annual COP conferences—to tackle complex climate issues and draft decisions for global leaders.

Looking Ahead

As we face growing climate challenges, the need for effective adaptation and transparent reporting becomes more critical. Statistics reveal that effective climate adaptation can reduce vulnerability by up to 50% in developing countries. Keeping transparency at the forefront not only builds trust but also improves cooperation among nations.

In a world where climate change impacts everyone, the outcomes from this Bonn session will significantly shape future discussions and actions on our planet’s climate.
