This overhaul is being termed one of the biggest changes in Apple’s software history. The goal is to simplify how people control and navigate their devices. Apple wants a more unified design across all its platforms since currently, apps and icons can look quite different depending on the device being used.

Rumor has it that these updates take inspiration from Vision Pro, Apple’s new mixed-reality headset. The VisionOS introduced a fresh look with rounded icons and a sleek design, moving away from the traditional flat interfaces of past systems.

Apple recently faced a small dip in iPhone sales—a 1% decline during the holiday quarter—which adds pressure to launch products that captivate consumers again. Furthermore, delays with an advanced AI-powered Siri could challenge Apple’s standing as competitors race ahead in AI development. This redesign might shift some focus away from AI efforts at the upcoming WWDC.

Ubrani noted that the changes need to modernize the look and feel of macOS and iOS as well. However, he believes that merely redesigning the software won’t necessarily drive sales; instead, the goal should be to create a smooth and consistent experience across all devices.

The design freshening comes as Apple seeks to maintain its competitive edge in a rapidly changing tech landscape. With a focus on user experience, Apple hopes that these updates will not only catch the eye of customers but also enhance their everyday interactions with their devices.

As technology evolves, user expectations also shift. A recent survey indicated that 73% of users prioritize a seamless experience across devices. Therefore, Apple’s commitment to a more cohesive design could resonate well with its audience, bridging the gap between aesthetics and functionality.
