Mesmerizing Encounter: Watch a Maori Octopus Choose to Feast on a Ray!

What happens underwater often fascinates many people. While scientists study whale behaviors and discover new species, amazing stories unfold that even casual observers can appreciate. Recently, a diver witnessed a dramatic encounter between an octopus and a ray, ending in an unexpected twist.

Jules Casey, an avid diver in Mornington Peninsula, Australia, often shares her underwater adventures on Instagram. On one dive, she ran into an octopus she had been observing for months, affectionately named Priscilla. “I’ve been visiting her almost daily. She’s comfortable having me swim alongside her while she hunts,” Casey shared.

Priscilla is a Maori octopus, a large species found around New Zealand and Australia. These clever creatures typically make their homes in rocky crevices and feast on crabs, abalone, and other fish. During her dive, Casey watched as Priscilla attempted to maneuver a banjo shark into her den. “I saw her struggle for an hour to bend the shark and squeeze it inside,” Casey explained. Eventually, Priscilla succeeded and consumed the entire animal.

Banjo sharks, known as fiddler rays, are bottom-dwelling fish that generally feed on crabs and shrimp. Unfortunately for this ray, it became a meal for Priscilla, showcasing the harsh realities of underwater life.

Interestingly, Maori octopuses have been in the spotlight recently for another strange behavior: riding on the backs of shortfin mako sharks. This shows the incredible adaptability and intelligence of these creatures.

According to marine biologists, such interactions highlight the complex relationships in ocean ecosystems. They remind us that every encounter beneath the waves can reveal the intricate balance of life underwater.
