NASA Tackles Challenges with Psyche Project’s Electric Thrusters: Latest Updates and Discoveries

NASA has hit a snag with its Psyche asteroid spacecraft, focusing on an issue with its electric propulsion system. An agency official mentioned that it’s not a big worry right now.

On April 29, NASA shared an update about the spacecraft’s thrusters shutting down on April 1 due to a drop in pressure in the xenon propellant line. The pressure fell from 36 pounds per square inch (248 kilopascals) to 26 pounds per square inch (179 kilopascals), which halted the thrusters. Details about how quickly this drop happened weren’t provided.

Psyche launched in October 2023 on a mission to explore an asteroid that shares its name. The spacecraft is expected to arrive at Psyche by August 2029, following a flyby of Mars in May 2026, after it turns on its Hall effect thrusters in May 2024.

Louise Prockter, who heads NASA’s planetary science division, spoke at a recent meeting and indicated that the teams at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are looking into the thruster issue. “They’re making good progress in pinpointing the problem,” she said. Maxar Space Systems is responsible for both the propulsion system and the spacecraft’s bus.

NASA noted that Psyche has time to coast until mid-June before its trajectory is affected significantly. Possible solutions could include using a backup propellant line.

Prockter added, “This happens sometimes, which is why we have built-in redundancy. We’re monitoring the situation but have no immediate concerns.”

Since its launch, Psyche has had a smooth operation, but it faced hurdles during its development. Delays in software testing shifted the launch date from August 2022 to October 2023 and increased the mission cost from $1 billion to $1.2 billion. Investigations into these delays revealed underlying issues at JPL, stemming from a heavy workload and communication lapses within the lab.
