In Santa Fe, New Mexico, authorities are investigating the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. Their bodies were found last month in their home, showing signs of mummification due to the dry climate.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office does not believe foul play was involved. They reported that tests for carbon monoxide poisoning came back negative. Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated the couple might have passed away up to two weeks before their bodies were found on February 26. Notably, Hackman’s pacemaker had recorded activity as recently as February 17.
At the scene, Arakawa was discovered in the bathroom with an open prescription bottle, while Hackman was found in the entryway. Tragically, one of their dogs was found dead, while two others survived. Initially, there was confusion about the breed of the deceased dog.
Authorities collected personal items from the home, such as cellphones and a planner, which will be examined as part of the investigation. Medical investigators are still working on determining the exact cause of death, as toxicology tests can take time to process.
Gene Hackman was a celebrated actor, known for iconic films like “The French Connection” and “Hoosiers.” He won two Academy Awards during his impressive career. Betsy Arakawa, originally from Hawaii, studied music and met Hackman while working at a gym. The couple lived in a Pueblo-revival style home that sits on a hillside, a property typical of Santa Fe’s appeal to artists and celebrities.
In retirement, Hackman focused on painting and writing, distancing himself from Hollywood. He contributed to the community by serving on the board of trustees for the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and investing in local businesses.
