Nintendo is looking ahead as it predicts sales of 15 million units of its upcoming Switch 2 by the end of the 2025/26 financial year. Along with hardware sales, they expect the software sales to reach an impressive 45 million units, excluding packages like the Mario Kart World bundle set for release on June 5.
This forecast follows Nintendo’s latest financial results, which showed a notable 31.2% drop in original Switch sales last year, totaling 10.8 million devices. Software sales for the original Switch also declined by 22.2%, with 155.41 million units sold.
Financially, Nintendo reported net sales of 1.164.9 billion yen, a 30.3% decrease compared to the previous year. Their net profit dropped by 43.2%, now at 278.8 billion yen.
Nintendo aims to boost its platform with the new Switch 2 by enhancing hardware and software sales. They plan to highlight the unique features of the new console and release fresh titles regularly.
However, they did mention that their forecasts are based on current U.S. tariff rates. Any changes could impact their financial outlook. Despite challenges, Nintendo anticipates selling 4.5 million original Switch units in the upcoming financial year, an impressive figure considering the console is nearing its ninth birthday.
Interestingly, the number of annual active users has fallen by roughly 1 million, now at 128 million. The lifetime sales of the original Switch are approaching 150 million units. Although digital sales fell by 26.5% this past year, digital transactions now account for 62.9% of total software sales, indicating a shift in consumer habits.
Popular titles for the fiscal year included "Super Mario Party Jamboree" and "The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom." "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe," a longstanding favorite, gained another 6.23 million sales, bringing its total to 68.2 million.
In the competitive gaming landscape, the demand for consoles remains high. Recent survey data shows that 70% of gamers are eagerly awaiting new hardware and titles. This interest could mean positive sales numbers for Nintendo as they launch the Switch 2.
