Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recently introduced new leaders at the Department of Homeland Security, specifically focusing on immigration enforcement. She also announced plans to enhance lie detector tests for employees to track down any leaks to the media about operations.
Noem stated, “I will use all the tools available to ensure we’re following the law and keeping people safe.” Her comments emphasize the department’s commitment to upholding President Trump’s immigration agenda.
Though polygraph tests are not widely accepted in court, they are often used by federal agencies to ensure national security. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin highlighted the necessity of these tests, saying, “The Department of Homeland Security should and will polygraph personnel.”
There has been some discontent among White House officials regarding the pace of deportations. They believe that information leaks about enforcement plans have hindered their efforts.
Noem announced two new appointments within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Todd Lyons, the former assistant director of field operations, will take on the role of acting ICE Director. Madison Sheahan, who previously worked with Noem in South Dakota, will serve as the deputy director. This change comes shortly after the reassignment of ICE’s former acting director and the removal of other top officials, which reflects the administration’s urgency to accelerate immigration enforcement.
In addition to the leadership changes, Noem mentioned that the agency is moving to prosecute two individuals accused of leaking information about planned enforcement operations. These leaks potentially exposed vulnerabilities in their operations, and the individuals involved could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
