Since adopting the Epic electronic medical record (EMR) system in 2020, NYC Health + Hospitals has seen significant improvements. In 2024, a notable 17% of eligible organizations made the Honor Roll. This recognition comes along with a $748,000 grant from Epic, affirming the hospital’s commitment to better patient care and operational excellence.

According to Kim Mendez, Senior Vice President and Corporate Chief Information Officer, this achievement reflects the hospital’s ongoing dedication to quality improvement. She emphasizes how important it is for their staff to have a user-friendly system that ultimately focuses on patient-centered services. Dr. Michael Bouton, Chief Medical and Health Information Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals, adds that the Epic Honor Roll serves as a guideline for effective EMR use, helping align their priorities when it comes to patient care.

To evaluate health systems, the Epic Honor Roll Good Maintenance Grant Program focuses on nine categories, including ease of use for providers and patient experience. Over the past few years, NYC Health + Hospitals has consistently enhanced the efficiency of the Epic EMR, directly benefiting both staff and patients.

For example, patient satisfaction has improved thanks to MyChart, Epic’s secure portal, which allows them to manage health information, communicate with providers, and schedule appointments. The Fast Pass feature, introduced in June 2022, has also made it possible for patients to schedule 13,000 earlier appointments—on average, about 29 days sooner! This system not only speeds up access to care but also optimizes how providers manage their schedules.

The hospital has also reported an increase in the use of features like “Physicians Builders” and “Nurse Brain.” These tools allow over 80% of providers to customize their EMR settings based on individual needs, leading to improved efficiency and job satisfaction. The Nurse Brain feature specifically assists nurses by organizing patient information and tasks in one place, thus minimizing the risk of errors.

In a world increasingly reliant on technology, NYC Health + Hospitals stands out for its commitment to leveraging innovative solutions that enhance healthcare delivery.
