It’s a tough time for Buck (Oliver Stark). His best friend Eddie (Ryan Guzman) is relocating to Texas, his sister Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) has been kidnapped by a serial killer, and even the dog he rescued is gone, back with its family. It seems like drama is Buck’s constant companion on 9-1-1.
In a recent interview, Stark shared how Buck is grappling with these challenges. Buck has faced abandonment issues before, and this situation digs it all up again. He’s dealing with some emotional baggage, especially with Eddie moving away. “He has to navigate his feelings instead of trying to control everything around him,” Stark says about Buck’s journey in Episode 9.
One of Buck’s misguided attempts to help involves finding a subletter for Eddie’s house. Instead of being supportive, he ends up sharing Eddie’s moving plans with everyone at the 118, despite Eddie’s request for privacy. This causes some friction between them. However, Buck eventually decides to take over Eddie’s house, which marks a significant change in his life. “That loft space does not exist anymore,” Stark confirms.
As for their goodbye, Stark hints it will be emotional. Though there’s tension, by the end of Episode 9, Buck has made progress in apologizing to Eddie. The farewell will balance sadness with acceptance, as Buck understands Eddie needs to be with his son, Christopher.
Meanwhile, Maddie’s storyline adds a gripping twist. She received a call from a serial killer, trying to stop him by talking him down. But things take a dark turn when she gets kidnapped by a detective, played by Abigail Spencer. And remember, Maddie is pregnant, adding another layer of urgency to the situation.
Stark contrasts Buck’s response to Maddie’s kidnapping with how he reacted previously. Instead of jumping into action, Buck will be more measured this time, weighing his options before assuming the worst. He also hints that Jee plays a crucial role in uncovering Maddie’s whereabouts.
